Overwatch was not going well.
Not wanting to play Final Fantasy XIV: Online: A Realm Reborn: And Others on account of having tried it, I settled in for some comfort food and was sitting at like 2 and 4. Or maybe 5, I dunno - it was going poorly.
Sometimes you don't know why you're losing a game of Overwatch - sometimes you feel like it's you screwing up, and it is, and sometimes you're pretty sure your tanks or DPS or healers just suck, and it's nice to have Chris around to confirm he hasn't had shit for heals either. But sometimes - like just now, the last game I played - you're pretty sure this Route 66 attack has been going to overtime every single point, and been like pulling teeth to get to the third point, because your second healer slot has been open and unoccupied all game.
The other DPS left too, but I know we had this one Mercy all game and one tank and otherwise our second healer would join, leave, a new one would join and immediately leave, and so on.
This is very disheartening - a match you're probably going to lose through legit no fault of your own or the rest of your team. (Maybe the Mercy was reaming everyone out in voice chat - I wouldn't know, I don't join it.) And this was very disheartening after already suffering a series of losses across support and DPS games. But...
But you never know, and even when you're in a game that looks absolutely unwinnable, the only way to really guarantee it is to stop trying. Never give up, never surrender, because when your other DPS leaves the game right as the clock ticks in to overtime on the third point and you just died on cart, whoever replaces them just might actually look at a losing game in OT and decide to bring the ruckus.
In this case it was a Sombra.
I guess what I'm saying is vote this November, but here's a clip from the game I was talking about!
The overtime battle would go on for another three minutes at least, but we won and that Mercy got a shot caller from me. During said rumble, that Winston switched to Ball and began spinning around the cart. I stuck him with my ultimate as he swung towards me but recalled too soon and reappeared as he swung back around and the bomb detonated, killing us both.
I gave a great gasp - at least my work was done - but our Mercy rezzed me and it was right back into it. And it felt like it was lasting forever. It was a few minutes, tops, but it was a crazed, insane whirlwind of bodies and bullets all swirling around that cart.
When it was finally over, I pumped a fist and barked "YES!" like a gunshot. Grinning from ear to ear, trying to catch my breath, absolutely emotionally exhausted - it was, not kidding, like giggling after a good lay. After the last couple days and the last couple games, it was exactly what I needed.
I was laying back, grinning, thinking "oh my God that was so good."
And that's why Overwatch.
